My favourite 1-nil Arsenal game

Arsenal v Parma, Parken Stadium 1994

This is my favourite all time 1-nil Arsenal game, the Cup Winners’ Cup final 1994. I travelled out with a friend by coach, it took forever but all the flights were fully booked. After searching around the city for hours on arrival we eventually found a reasonably priced room that hadn’t been snapped up.

The Italian club Parma were the Cup Winners’ Cup holders and they were firm favourites going into the game. They had a formidable team at the time that included Faustino Asprilla, Gianfranco Zola and Tomas Brolin. Arsenal on the other hand were not performing as well as they had in recent seasons and their main man Ian Wright was suspended from the match.

Arsenal took an unlikely lead in the 20th minute through an Alan Smith left foot volley. They could have easily been 2-nil down at that stage after Parma hit the post and also forced a great save from Arsenal keeper David Seaman. Arsenal then spent the majority of the remaining minutes doing what they did best, defending and they were truly outstanding at the back.

The atmosphere in the Parken Stadium was really amazing that night and the celebrations in the city centre went on until the early hours. Steve McKeogh has kindly added the match highlights on YouTube.
